The project “MoToRes: Mobility and Tourism for Individual User Needs and Regional Specificities” started on 1 July 2024. The project is carried out by the Leibniz University of Hannover (L3S Research Centre), PROJEKTIONISTEN, the University of Bonn (DSIS – Data Science and Intelligent Systems), Connect-Fahrplanauskunft and Wangerland Touristik as part of the mFUND programme and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport.
Aim of the project
The main objective of MoToRes is to use modern artificial intelligence (AI) to recommend tailor-made routes to travellers, taking into account both their individual needs and regional characteristics. The aim is to optimise both the use of transport and tourist attractions.
Benefits for travellers and suppliers
Personalised travel planning and the targeted management of tourist flows require innovative technologies. MoToRes offers mobility and tourism providers the opportunity to use AI to develop personalised, environmentally friendly and cross-modal travel offers. The aim is to minimise the effort involved in travel planning and to make efficient use of existing infrastructure.
Duration and research focus
From July 2024 to February 2027, the MoToRes consortium will use various data sources and develop new AI algorithms to create a technical orchestration platform and user-friendly prototypes. Research will focus on three areas
Knowledge graphs for mobility and tourism: structures that link knowledge about mobility and tourism offers.
AI-based explainable routing: route recommendations that are understandable and adaptable.
Large language models for mobility and tourism: Using AI models based on natural language to generate personalised travel suggestions.
Practical testing
The project results will be tested and evaluated in two real-life test scenarios in cooperation with the partners Wangerland Touristik and Connect-Fahrplanauskunft.
Comments on the project
“With MoToRes, we are putting the latest research results from the fields of large language models and knowledge graphs into practice and adapting them to the needs of mobility and tourism,” explains Prof. Wolfgang Nejdl, Director of the L3S Research Centre and project coordinator.
The MoToRes project contributes to the mFUND innovation initiative, which focuses on the use of mobility data for the future of mobility.
