Understanding Long COVID

The L3S is part of the new research project FEDCOV that investigates the pathogenesis of long-/post-COVID by using huge amounts of data and new AI methods. The aim is to gain a better understanding of the disease and its symptoms.

Post-COVID still affects millions of people worldwide, but the mechanisms are still poorly understood. To gain a deeper insight into the development of the often very different symptoms, FEDCOV will use long/post-COVID datasets to develop federated learning approaches. In addition, new models for individual and early prediction of long/post-COVID will contribute to improved clinical diagnosis and individualised treatment.

Project partners include:

– Hannover Medical School / Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research

– Hannover Medical School / Hannover Unified Biobank

– The Pennsylvania State University (USA)

– Robert Koch Institute (Germany)

To achieve its goals, FEDCOV will align data of different cohorts, harmonise these datasets and finally construct long-/post-COVID phenotypes generated by federated learning.

Launched in January 2025, the project will run for two years. Funding comes from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
