AI-based knowledge graph for the humanities

L3S is a partner in a new European research project that aims to improve work in the social sciences and humanities using artificial intelligence, a knowledge graphs and open science. The project, called GRAPHIA, aims to make it easier for researchers to access important data and gain new insights.   GRAPHIA will focus on building a comprehensive knowledge graph specifically for the social sciences and humanities (SSH). By integrating fragmented SSH data into the knowledge graph, GRAPHIA will improve machine readability, visualisation and knowledge extraction in all SSE disciplines. This will be supported using advanced AI models, including the latest Large Language Models (LLMs). A central element of GRAPHIA is the new SSH Citation Index, which will support the automated extraction of citation data from all SSH disciplines and facilitate access to past research. This will significantly advance not only the visualisation but also the analysis and understanding of complex, unstructured data.

The project brings together five major European research initiatives in the field of SSH with eight private sector partners. The aim is to improve the quality and usability of research data, promote scientific exchange and create new applications for business and society. GRAPHIA also focuses on ethical standards: The focus is on the responsible use of data, the fight against misinformation and long-term sustainability.

GRAPHIA is creating a new digital infrastructure to meet the challenges of modern research. In addition to promoting scientific progress, the project will provide a sustainable basis for interdisciplinary collaboration and the digital transformation of research in the humanities and social sciences.

The EU-funded project will run from January 2025 to December 2027. At L3S, it is managed by Prof Dr Sören Auer and Jan Wiebelitz.
